Choosing the correct ballet dance wear for a ballet class is very important.

They may require special colors, brands or styles.

If you are free to choose your own clothes, you will still need to consider the best dance wear suitable for all the ballet movements.

Firstly, you will need a ballet leotard. This is basically the best ballet clothing to wear to a ballet class. It fits the body like a glove, enabling stretching and dancing, without restricting movement.

The ballet teacher needs to be able to see the body line as it performs the ballet moves, to make sure the student is doing everything correctly, and to be able to correct posture and technique if necessary.

If the dancer is wearing tops and shorts, etc, it is harder to see the line of the dancer and when mistakes are left it is harder to correct later on.

When girls are very young they may like to wear a ballet skirt. This is normally a short, wraparound skirt.

In winter, a crossover top can be worn whilst warming up. This is a long sleeved, tight fitting top made of lycra. Being close to the body, it doesn't hinder any movement.

When boys are doing a ballet class, they will still need tight fitting clothes to enable free movement and for the line and posture to be seen.

The best ballet dancewear for boys is a pair of ballet pants or tight fitting pants, worn with a white t-shirt or leotard.

Boys always wear black ballet shoes.
