Every young dancer dreams of the day they will have the chance to wear a ballet tutu.
A tutu is worn for classical ballet dance. There are some beautiful, exquisite tutu dresses available.
They consist of a fitted bodice, a multi layered skirt and pants.
It requires a lot of time and technique to sew and make a tutu, especially one made with a
fitted bodice which may have hook and eye fastening, special tutu fabrics such as satin and intricate detailed needlework such as
stitching, lace, beads, sequins and accessories.
These, however, are the details that gives a tutu a fairy tale feel to it.
It can take a while to learn to dance in a tutu, as you have to get used to the stiff skirt, keeping a distance from other dancers, bending and
moving without the skirt getting in your way and dancing without being able to see your feet!
You will need to wear Ballet Tights, which are normally a pale pink. For shoes, you can wear either Ballet Shoes, or slippers, or if you have progressed to that level, you can dance en pointe.
In the late 1600's, as ballet moved from the courts of France to the stage, dancers started to learn more athletic moves and techniques.
The big, heavy
costumes of old, were cumbersome and hid the moves the dancers had struggled to learn and show.
Gradually, by the late
19th century as ballet dance and techniques evolved, dancers needed to shorten their costumes in order to perform the new, more
difficult techniques that were emerging.
One of the first ballet tutus was the "Romantic Tutu", a many layered skirt, softly flowing to below the knees. This particular design later
appeared in Swan Lake.
Later the stiff skirt "Pancake" or "Powder Puff" Tutu appeared. The purpose of this tutu was to reveal all the dancer's leg, to completely show
off the ballerina's technique.
Dance Competitions
If your daughter is doing a classical ballet dance for dance competitions, or dance recital, she will need a ballet tutu for her dance costume.
Although they will be marked on their dance skills and technique, the competition dance costume will be judged as well. If there is a lot of
competition, well made ballet tutus will set you apart from the rest. These dance costumes will complete the performance.
If you are looking for inexpensive tutus, scroll down the page for some beautiful dance tutus for sale at ebay. They're cheaper than it would cost you to make them, yet still high quality for dance recitals and performances. There are so many different styles to choose from. With children having
growth spurts, they could grow out of it in one year, (you cannot have a tutu too big!)
You can always
improve on a simple one with the addition of some lace, beads or sequins.
Dancing in a Tutu
When you are preparing for a performance in a ballet tutu, after you have learnt the dance, you must then learn how to dance in a tutu.
It can be quite restricting if you haven't worn one before. They are a lot different to all other dance costumes.
The bodice is often stiff and quite tight. The skirt is either a long full skirt, which is not so hard to get used to. Just be careful not to trip over it when low to the ground, or if you do any floor work.
If the tutu has a stiff skirt, you will need to practice the dance in it, by yourself, but also with the rest of the group, to work out even spacings, to align on the stage in the right places, how to get up and go down to the floor gracefully, with a stiff skirt on.
The dancers in this photo are doing a stage rehearsal in their costumes, to be sure of their correct places in the dance.

How to Make a Tutu
There are different ways to make a tutu.
One method is to make a skirt with pants attached and a separate bodice.
Another way is to have the bodice and skirt as one piece and the pants separate.
The other, simpler and cheaper option is to have a leotard and the skirt attaches separately.
Check this page regularly as I will soon be linking to pages with instructions on how to make a tutu.
Taking Care of Your Tutu
A tutu needs to be stored in a special Tutu Bag, which is a bag large enough for the tutu skirt to lay out flat. Store this bag on a flat surface.
Do not hang it as the skirt could crumple as it drops in the bag.
Tutu Accessories
To finish off a tutu costume, you may have to paint your ballet shoes to match the costume.
The hair is always worn in a classical ballerina bun. You can accessorise with ribbons or flowers in the hair. A small tiara looks beautiful
or small diamante studded hair pins in the hair and bun looks very elegant.
Don't forget once you've got your costume and hair organised, to complete the look with your makeup. For ballerina makeup you need to open the eyes and highlight the facial features, without being too dramatic. Have a look at our Dance Makeup for how to apply makeup and other handy tips!
