Character dance shoes are often used for a classical ballet exam syllabus.

In ballet, they will learn the elements necessary for a National Dance. The students learn different dance steps and postures. Apart from the costume which would come from the identity of the country the dance is based on, the character dance shoe is always worn.

A Character shoe is often made from a soft, durable canvas on the upper shoe and a suede sole underneath. The most common colour is black. There is a skin or pink coloured elastic over the top of the foot to keep the shoe on. Other styles of shoes are made from leather, half open or enclosed, with a strap and buckle.

Heel sizes can vary so do check any requirement with your teacher before buying. Mostly they come in a low heel - suitable for young children and a cuban heel which is slightly taller, which is more suited for older students.
