When kids start taking dance classes, along with dance wear such as leotards, they will also need to wear tights.

Tights will help to keep the leg
muscles warm as they warm up and exercise during the dance class. When they are doing floor work, dance tights help to stop
friction and burns.
For ballet class girls will need pink ballet tights.
Check your dance school for requirements for other classes, some ask for jazz or shimmery tights for jazz and tap classes (although these tights
are more expensive), you can normally wear the pink tights to all classes.

When performing on stage for a competition, recital or for an exam, you will need the correct tights for that dance. Pink for ballet,
you will also need camel jazz tights for jazz and tap. These are a thicker tights, with a shimmer to them. They are very flattering to the legs!
When preparing for a competition performance, it is a good practice to always have a spare pair in case you get a hole when putting
them on.
Other tights you can use for dancing are:
Stirrup Tights.
These can be jazz style tights or ballet style. The same as tights, only instead of an enclosed foot there is a stirrup going under the arch of
the foot, leaving the top of the foot, heel and ball of the foot free. Ideal for barefoot dancing whilst still having tights on for the look and finish of the costume and warmth. You can team them up with Dance Paws to aid movement whilst dancing barefoot. They are available in black, white, ballet pink, suntan and light suntan, so you should find a pair suitable for any colored costume. Here are a couple of pictures showing dancers performing, wearing skin colored stirrup tights.
Convertible Tights
Known as convertible or transition, these are tights that have a slit or hole in the foot. They can be worn normally as full footed tights or you can bring the foot through and wear them as footless tights. These are ideal to use when doing several classes of different dance styles on one day where you need different style tights. The most convenient and versatile of dance tights. Bloch and Capezio are the leaders worldwide in good quality dance wear. You can be sure of a high quality when buying these brands.
Footless Tights

These stockings are ideal for dances where you want to wear tights for warmth and protection but don't want tights on the feet. These are great to wear
to hip hop classes or for special dances where you need tights on, perhaps for a smooth slide into the splits or if you're doing a lot of floor work.
Footed tights are great for performances, concerts, recitals, eisteddfods, etc.
