HAIRSPRAY THE MOVIE

Hairspray
Hairspray the Movie is set in 1962 and plump teenager Tracy Turnblad is only interested in music, dancing and the Corny Collins Show.

Every day Tracy and her friend Penny go home together to watch the show on TV and copy the dance moves. Tracy has a huge crush on one of the lead dancers, teenage heart throb Link Larkin.

At school, she gets put into detention and makes friends with Seaweed and some of the black kids who dance on the show once a month on "Negro Day". She starts to hang out with them and learns all their dance moves.

Tracy's a great dancer, so when one of the dancers on the show leaves, they hold auditions and Tracy goes along. She makes it on to the show, angering the show's star dancer Amber Von Tussle and her mother, the ultra slim and nasty show's manager, Velma Von Tussle, who doesn't want Tracy on the show because she is overweight.

Tracy feels its not fair that the black kids only dance once a month, and along with her mother Edna, her father, Penny, Seaweed and Motormouth Maybelle, she sets out to get the show integrated and dance up a storm.

There are some wonderful dance numbers and a great soundtrack in Hairspray that will have you up on your feet dancing and singing along. Click on the image on the right for the audio CD of the film.

Hairspray was originally made in 1988, with a male actor playing the role of Tracy's mother, Edna. The new version made in 2007, has John Travolta playing Edna. The new version is based on the stage play Hairspray The Musical. Personally I prefer this version to the original.

A wonderful, upbeat music and dance film.
