My Tap Exam (Grade 4)

by Lorelai

When my teacher entered me in the tap exam saying I was the best tap dancer in the class I was on the verge of having a nervous breakdown. You see I know I am a very talented tap dancer and have been since the age of two and a half but dont like exams.

The exam itself was a hard time step routine, a very fast dance and 8 exercises! For the exam I had to master the single footed wing (which is a fear of mine) and be able to do all sorts of other things that I couldn't do.

One by one I learnt all the steps and completley mastered my fear of the single footed wing. All was well until the twin sisters put into the exam with me were involved in a car accident that broke Rachel's arm and May's leg. I was faced just a week before the exam with the dim prospects of having to do this exam alone. Not the best news for a girl like me who panics at being late for class!

But I carried on just because I didn't want to have to do that same scary dance for another year. So I wait behind the door listening intently to the class before me taking their exam. Soon I heard the dreaded, "Goodbye madam and thank you." It was time.

During the exam I made various silly mistakes but they were tiny and went unnoticed. I ended up getting a distinction (94/100) The highest mark anybody at my prestigious dance school had ever gotten. That year I was awarded an award for my achievement and I'm happy that I managed to overcome many fears and do a very important exam on my own!

Tap Dance Exams
by: Ann

Wow, you're a brave girl, good on you for facing your fears and overcoming them, and what an amazing result! By persevering and not quitting, you proved to yourself you can do anything if you want it enough. I bet you have a lot more confidence in yourself now, too!
You should be very proud of yourself and now you know for next time, it's not too difficult. You deserve your award.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. I'm sure it will help and encourage other dance kids who are nervous about doing dance exams.
