STRICTLY BALLROOM MOVIE
The Strictly Ballroom movie is a bright, colourful, slightly over the top look at the world of ballroom dancing.
Scott Hastings is a champion male ballroom dancer. He doesn't like to follow the rigid rules of the Australian ballroom dance
community, prefering to create his own steps and style of dancing, which infuriates the ballroom dance establishments.
Because of his attitude, his partner leaves him, causing him to take on someone new to train with and prepare for the major
Australia Pan Pacific Ballroom Championships.
His new partner, Fran, a beginner dancer, doesn't appear to have the potential to be able to dance at that standard, or be elegant
enough. But slowly, with Scott's help, Fran turns into an assured and wonderful dancer and the two compete at the ballroom
championships.
Strictly Ballroom is a wonderful, amusing comedy, highlighting the need to always remember that dance is an expression of what you feel, and
there is always room for change and new directions. There is a great soundtrack to this movie, with good songs for dancing to, especially Latin and Ballroom. This was Baz Luhrmann's first film, before he made Moulin Rouge and you can see his colorful, energetic, over the top storytelling emerging.
