Tap Dance Costumes

Tap dance costumes are very glamorous, reflecting back to the thirties and forties when tap dancing was so popular.

They are often elaborate designs.
For girls, a skirt or dress is most popular. These are always short to reveal the legs and show off the footwork, steps and tapping technique to the best advantage. Also very popular are long tight fitting pants, or unitards.

Tap dancing is also very popular with the boys and they will wear long pants - often black, with a dazzling shirt and sometimes, accessories.

Tap costumes are mostly tight fitting costumes made of stretchy material such as lycra.

They can evoke an image or style, such as Sailor girl, Cowgirl, 20's Rapper, 40's Jazz/Cabaret dancer or a 50's Bopper.

Hats are very popular accessories with tap costumes. It also gives the dancer something to do with their hands whilst the emphasis of the dance is on the feet.

Shimmery dance tights are best worn with these costumes!

When trousers are worn, black is very popular, but there are many other stylish colors for a tap costume.

If you are choosing to wear pants, make sure they do not cover the feet, get caught between the ankles or under the heel when dancing.

The tap costume needs to be designed for freedom of movement. The dance costume must not get in the way of the moves, hindering turns or footwork.

Simple Designs

Add a circular or fringed skirt.

Bring glamour to the costume by adding to this, such as
ruffles, fringes, bows, feathers and sequins.

Add a top hat or a diamond/triangle shaped headpiece with a
bow or feather.

Other ideas to add include gloves, armbands, or braces.

For competition dance costumes, you can add taps to any normal shoe to go with a costume, such as cowboy boots, etc.

You must make sure the shoes fit well to begin with and can be danced in without causing any discomfort in the foot.

Use these only for stage performances, not everyday practice as it may cause strain or injury.
